I've had an interesting afternoon today and ended up taking Hayde to the vet unexpectedly. Jeremy took her out hunting Thursday
evening out past Pembroke. There are some public duck/goose blinds that he went to on a river. He did come home with a green-winged teal! Finally, a Canadian duck! He saw quite a few other ducks, but when they flew past, he wasn't prepared to shoot. He debated whether to save it for mounting or to eat it and decided to keep it to eat. It was in really good condition after being shot and after Hayde retrieved it - hence the thought of mounting it. Unfortunately, at some point while they were out, somehow, Hayde had gotten into a porcupine. Jeremy never saw what happened, but after getting back and giving her a bath (she had gotten pretty muddy retrieving), he pulled out a couple quills. I was concerned and checked her pretty well for more and didn't see any. Friday, I noticed she was pretty sore under her arm and check that and she had a red slightly swollen spot. I disinfected it and figured she must have gotten cut on something. Later I found a quill on her snout and managed to pull that out with a tweezers. Sunday morning, I was rechecking under her arm and sure enough, there was a quill sticking out about 2-3 inches. I was able to pull this quill out. I did notice a scab on her lower neck, but again, didn't think tooo much of it - until today. I came home from work (early!) and quickly found a huge
lump on her neck. I got concerned and called the vet and decided I better take her in. I guessed it might be another quill, but didn't want it to be something more serious. They shaved the area and stuck a needle in to see if they could get any fluids out, but didn't. So, they sent us home with some antibiotics and figured it must be a quill by the feel of the lump. We're hoping it'll work it's way out on it's own by the end of the weekend, but if not or it gets worse, we'll have to take her back in to have them surgically open it up and see what it is and remove it. Poor pup! At least it doesn't seem to bother her too much. It just looks really bad.
I started my first official day at AECL on Friday. The day was spent getting my badge, filling out HR forms and doing a computer safety tutorial/testing. This week is a full of more
orientation presentations listening to people talk about some of the history of the company, more safety and other information we're supposed to know and getting tested on prior to getting out in the work field. Friday afternoon will be our official start of our "jobs". I did FINALLY get to see a "wild" black bear at work yesterday!!!!! We're in Deep River at an old elementary school and it was walking along a bank behind some houses, behind the parking lot and at the back of the high school - right in the middle of town! Of course, Jeremy's spending a few days this week in Toronto for training so it's been a slightly more challenging start to my job without him around and Hayde's having to get used to me not being around the house all day too.
Over the weekend, we hauled the boat out of the garage and Jeremy got it winterized. We then
pushed it back in. He also got up on the roof and sealed up some spots that had a potential for leaking. We'll have to plan a couple of weeks next summer to re-roof it. We're thinking it's going to be a big job as some of the wood underneath is damp and will probably have to be replace (good thing we both now have jobs!!!). We then began tackling the closets in the computer room. We tore everything out, painted the ceiling and top of the walls and Jeremy put in some tongue and groof paneling and put up some shelves.
We're still figuring out what we want to do with the other portion of the closet - how many shelves we want. I painted the trim the other night and hope to get the rest of the trim done soon. I did get the rest of the books put away! Whew! So many school books. Wait til I get all of mine that are still at my parents house! It might actually look like we're smart.....but then again, all these smart books will be stashed away in the closet!
