Trip to Ottawa

I first have to say our neighbors downstairs got a 3 month old boxer-mix puppy this week named Dolly. The dogs have had a great time playing with each other. Everytime we come back in the house, Hayde immediately goes back to the door wanting to go back out to play. I think they'll make great play companions.

Our other exciting news is our trip to Ottawa to the Boat and Outdoor Sports Show and the hockey game. After getting up and getting ourselves organized to get in the car with all our directions and information, we headed off to Pembroke for an oil change and to get some poster board for a sign for the hockey game. Looks like Jeremy's truck is leaking just about everything possible. Let's hope his truck will continue to last and get us from point A to point B!

After getting on the road, we put in an audio book of Star Wars. Jeremy's been addicted to listening to the ENTIRE series. We've been able to download them and put them on my MP3 player that hooks up to a transmitter in the cigarette lighter that transfers it to the radio. The Outdoors Sports show turned out to be located just off the road to the airport so it was easy to find. We got there about a 1/2 hour after they opened. The first building we hit was mainly boats. Jeremy's been considering trading in his boat for a different one, but we'll have to wait and see what the summer brings and were we want to spend time fishing. His boat is nice since it's not very deep so we can get into shallower lakes, but it gets blown around in the wind or waves easily. We also found a solo canoe that interested him for hunting. It's nice and small and has plenty of room for Hayde and some extra gear(decoys), but that'll have to wait for a bit.

The next building housed more boats on the lower floor, but had more hunting people on the upper floor. We did find out come fall of this year, anyone that operates a boat will have to have passed the boating safety test so that will be something we'll have to do. We almost took it there, but it costs $60 a person and we ended up leaving to head to the hockey stadium. On the upper level, we found someone selling handmade knives that lives in Pembroke. We found some like the knife Jeremy now has of his dad's. It has such a pretty handle. We also ended up talking to someone advertising a bird hunting magazine who lives south of Arnprior (~1hr away) close to the game farm we had gone to. He was very friendly and told Jeremy to get in touch with him if he wants to go out bird hunting. Apparently, we just live a few miles too far west in too much of a wooded area for ducks and geese, but on the otherside of Pembroke closer to Arnprior, there are lots of birds since there's more farmland. He also told us their group is going to have a banquet on Saturday night that we could attend if we were interested. He also has a friend that breeds labs if Jeremy's interested in another dog. We stopped at a few more exhibitors here before heading to the third building.

At the last building, we found lots of interesting exhibitors. A lot of them were from fishing lodges around Ontario and Quebec. We even met a couple originally from WI that saw Jeremy's Wisconsin Badger's Hockey shirt he was wearing. They have a lodge north of North Bay in Quebec they run in the summer. We stopped to look at some depth finders since Jeremy's interested in trying to make his own hydrographical maps of the area lakes from a depth finder/GPS unit since we can't find anyone that's produced these. Otherwise, it's hard to know where to fish and what the lake bottoms and depths are like. It looks like there are a few depth finders that can do something like he wants, but they're fairly costly. We did run into someone from Clear Lake, the lake Amanda from the basement fishes, and he had a rough map of that lake. We also stopped at the MNR (ministry of natural resources) to see what they could tell us, but they told us to call the local office for more information. Somehow, that's about all the info we can get from anyone so it's a run-around-in-circles and we end up not getting any info out of anyone. We finally hit everything by 4:00-4:30 and had to sit down for a few minutes to debate what we wanted to do next.

We figured we should head over towards the hockey arena before it got too late and before traffic go bad. Once we got there and found our way around, we ended up eating at Jack Astro's Bar and Grill. I think a lot of other senator fans were there too since almost every table had someone wearing a jersey. It was a good meal and we filled our bellies and headed back to the arena and found a spot to park. We got the poster board out and I colored out two signs:

......PAVELSKI
......SCORES ON
........ELLIOTT
W GO BADGERS W

........ELLIOTT
..........STOPS
......PAVELSKI
W GO BADGERS W

We were hoping Elliott (the badger's goalie when winning the national champs) would be playing for the senators and Pavelski, #8, (another badger player when winning the national champs) has been playing on the second line of the Sharks. Turns out Elliott only got out on the ice to warm up so our sign was no use. Pavelski got some good playing time though. AND, the sharks ended up winning so it was nice for Jeremy to be able to finally watch them win. They never seem to win each time he watches them on TV. Plus, Jeremy ended up getting a free t-shirt that had parachuted down from the ceiling in the arena and somehow ended up floating right down to him. So, in the end, the day turned out to be a fun and successful day. We got home just before midnight and thanks to Lee, Hayde got fed and got out a couple times. Poor Stewart somehow got himself into the front room where Jeremy keeps his hunting and hockey stuff and got locked in there all day. Hayde did get into a reel of new fishing line and I've only found half the plastic reel, so hopefully no one ate all the line or we're in big trouble.
MOVIE
Jeremy's decided to join a hockey tournament this weekend so he's off at that tonight in Deep River.
