Weekend Outtings

Unfortunately, we are still without heat as I guess we need a valve replaced on the furnace before it'll work. The guy should be coming tomorrow evening sometime after 4pm. Too bad, the temps have dropped and we're sitting in the 50's this afternoon and the house is keeping about 2 degrees warmer then outside. We must've gotten a good frost overnight since by 10 am this morning it was still in the 30s. Brrrr. At least it's sunny.

Other than being a bit cool(well, Jeremy's thinking this is the perfect temperature finally), we headed out to the Petawawa Research Forest yesterday morning for a guided hike. Somehow, when I went with my parents, we didn't see this other trail behind the visitors center. It was a slow hike as we stopped to talk about all the trees and woods, but it was interesting and Hayde had a good test being outside in such a fun place with so many smells and people. She was one of three dogs that joined the group. I'd have to say she did a great job considering and people kept coming up to talk to us about her.

After we got home, we made our weekly trip into Pembroke. We wanted to look into purchasing the wine kit and pick up a few things at the Bulk Store. Turns out they had sold the last remaing kit, but we were able to gather the equipment separately and came home with a full kit. We just picked up some frozen raspberries from the grocery store to give our 1st batch a try - using the receipe we got from Jeremy's mom's neighbor. The lady at the wine store told us to freeze whatever berries we use to get more juice out of them. I'll keep updates with this 1st batch. Hopefully, we can start it this afternoon, but we keep trying to do things and then the day's over before we know it and we didn't get things done that we had planned.

Looks like our Saturday nights will be filled with watching hockey - go figure! Last weekend, Jeremy was super excited and found 10 games to watch Sat night. His only question - what game(s) do you watch when there are so many?! Turns out the answer is zero - he fell asleep as soon as the puck was dropped... Last night wasn't much better, but he did manage to watch some of the games before he was out. Ummm...we'll have to work on this.

This morning, we took Hayde back to the Petawawa Research Forest and hiked the trail along the Chalk River which I had done with my parents when they were here. Afterwards, we took her over to the Petawawa Terrace Provincial Park in town and did another walk. It's looking like most of the leaves have fallen and most trees are bare. We had a couple days of really strong winds, so I'm sure that helped.

Otherwise, I'm getting frustrated over the cats. Kitty is a super affecionate cat, but she's got enough issues and I'm afraid Stewart is starting to learn from her trouble making. He's been much more interested in human food last week then I've ever seen him. Kitty's missed her litter box twice now in the last two weeks and I'm not sure why since she was doing such a good job since we had moved. She is highly prone to crystals in her urine, which is why she was having problems initially, but that's been resovled as long as I keep her on her special prescription diet. However, she's not supposed to be eating anything other than this food and that's where the problems come in. Since she was a stray, she's got a huge issue with food aggression. The first few days after I took her in, she'd practially bite off my hand as I tried feeding her, but I've trained her to learn a little bit of patience. The biggest problem is she gets onto the counter and seeks out the smallest crumb. Any food left out will be devoured in seconds. Last week, she even started going after the dish rag and and I found the dish sponge one day with a bite missing! (I know it wasn't Hayde since she was with me while we were gone.) I'm also having trouble training Jeremy not to leave any bits of food out and to put his dirty dishes in the dish washer so as not to give Kitty any reason to see what's on the counter or in the sink. I'm affraid this might be a loosing battle. I do, however, have Hayde on my side and she's a help disciplining Kitty by running after her and scolding her when she's been naughty.
